Bipolar I Disorder
This the classic form of the disease that includes depression and recurrent episodes of mania. The DSM-IV-TR defines bipolar I disorder as one or more manic or mixed episodes, with patients often also having experienced one or more major depressive episodes. People may be diagnosed as having bipolar I disorder after experiencing one manic episode, even if a major depressive episode has not yet occurred - this is classified as bipolar I disorder, single manic episode. Bipolar I disorder may also be categorized based on the most recent episode (e.g., bipolar I disorder, most recent episode manic).
