What are the Pharmacologic Factors that cause mania or depression?

A number of pharmacologic agents have been reported to cause symptoms of mania or depression. For example, opiates, cocaine, and some antidepressants (especially tricyclic antidepressants) can precipitate mania in some people with bipolar disorder, while some beta blockers and typical antipsychotics can precipitate depressive symptoms. In addition, stimulants (amphetamines) can cause mania or depression. A careful patient history and laboratory tests can help the clinician rule out these factors.
