What is mixed bipolar state?

It is a disease state where the symptoms of depression and mania are present together.

  • The most common symptoms of mixed bipolar conditions are:
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Agitation
  • Alterations in appetite
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Psychosis
  • Having sad and hopeless mood together with feeling extremely energized

To be diagnosed with a mixed episode, patients must meet the criteria for both a manic episode and a major depressive episode nearly every day for at least 1 week. The symptoms must also be severe enough to impair occupational or social functioning or to require hospitalization, or psychotic features may be present.
